March 17, 2020

Dear Parents and/or Guardians of Children in the IRSD with 504 Plans and IEPs,

We are committed to continuing to provide the best level of support possible for your children as we navigate these difficult times.  As this is new for all of us, the IRSD Leadership Cabinet has spent the weekend and beginning of the week brainstorming ways to support our children while still practicing “social distancing” as recommended to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In order to provide the best level of support possible, we are opening a Department of Special Services hotline during the school closures.  This hotline number will put you in touch directly with the Director of Special Education, Dr. Judi Brittingham. Our Spanish speaking families are encouraged to text the hotline number so Dr. Brittingham can set up an interpreter for a return call.

The hotline number will go live at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 19th.  The hotline number will remain open for the duration of the school closures for Special Services support.  This number will be answered during regular business hours from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.  The IRSD Special Services hotline number is 302-604-2121.

This number does not replace the Delaware Guidance Mobile Crisis Hotline number if your child is experiencing a mental health emergency.  You can reach them at 1-800-969-4357.

Starting on Thursday, March 19, 2020, we will open via the hotline for consultative services, tele-support services, and/or virtual support for the following:

*Consultative Services via Telephone: We are creating a list of adaptive on-line activities that will present academic and social/emotional information on your child’s current level and adapt as your child has success with the online technology.

*Consultative Services In-Person: We will have a certified special educator available for consultation at all of our meal delivery areas if you have questions that you would like answered in person.  Please follow the district website for the most up to date meal delivery locations and times.

*Counseling Services via telephone or virtual technology: For children that need support with increased anxiety and/or agitation due to the school closure or for any additional needed counseling support, we will provide tele-counseling, or if technology is available, virtual counseling.

*Material Delivery: If your family does not have access to technology and would like materials created that are adapted to your child’s needs in paper copies, we will prepare appropriate adapted materials and have them available for pick-up at our meal delivery locations. Please follow the district website for the most up to date meal delivery locations and times.  We will be reaching out to families that we know are in need of specific IEP/504 materials in the next few business days, but if you require immediate assistance please call the hotline.

*Social/Emotional Wellness Support: If you have a child that gets regular support for their Social/Emotional Wellness, we will provide activities that can be done as a family or online.

*IEP and 504 Material Support:  If your child requires specialized equipment per their current IEP or 504 to complete any of the adapted materials, we will prepare and provide these materials at the closest meal delivery area to your location.  Adapted materials may include large print, specialized writing equipment, specialized cushions, specialized bands for seats, etc.  Please follow the district website for the most up to date meal delivery locations and times.

As the Department of Instruction has shared at this time any work completed at home is voluntary and will not be graded.  Children will not be assessed on the materials they are completing at home.  These materials are just provided as a support.

Thank you for your support and patience as we remain committed to our vision during this unique situation of “specializing in the individual.”
